FIRST STEP LEAD NEWPORT TO VICTORY

FIRST STEP LEAD NEWPORT TO VICTORY

Congratulations to Newport Primary School for winning the Howden School and Technology College Dance competition for primary schools. First Step Dance worked hard with this year 6 class and their teacher during curriculum time each week, to choreograph a winning performance in which the children created movement based on the set stimuli  ‘places’. Thinking about Africa we looked at the different animals that live there and explored their characteristics through movement and set tasks. From this the children created a final piece of dance, choreographed to a song from the film ‘The Lion King’ to which they performed wearing colourful animal masks and costumes. The result was an enjoyable and outstanding performance in which they came first and proudly represented their school. If you would like First Step Dance to help you work towards a performance please click on the enquire button.

Track Star Tim hands out gold medals to Sproatleys Olympians

By Terry Bearpark, South Holderness Gazette,  25th June 09

SPROATLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL pupils celebrated National School Sports Week with their own Olympic games, including a lavish opening ceremony. The young athletes were split into teams, representing the five continents and tool part in all manner of racers and events, with participation being more important than winning. Unfortunately, the planned closing ceremony at the end of last week’s event had to be cancelled. However, the excited youngsters were pleased to welcome 200 metres Commonwealth Games champion and 2012 Olympic hopeful Tim Abeyie to present medals.  He has gained many successes, notably in national championships and European events, and is based in Loughborough.  Tim is an ambassador for the First Step Sports who work in the school delivering PE lessons.  First Step employs coaches and athletes with a background in various sports and by utilising specialists in various sports they can ensure that skills are correctly taught.  The aim is to engage those children who are not usually interested in sports with coaches and athletes serving as role models and inspiration to the children on the programs.  In keeping with the Olympic tradition, the five Olympic rings were reproduced in the school hall, and were made by using paper templates of every pupil’s hands. The whole games events were organized by the teachers Claire Rhodes and Fay Crawforth.

TAKE FIRST STEPS TO RECOVERY

TAKE FIRST STEPS TO RECOVERY

Claudia Tanner, Hull Daily Mail

Businesses across Hull are being given extra help by the City Council to combat the recession.

A range of packages are on offer to help create employment opportunities and inject wealth into the local economy. As part of the Mail’s Bounce Back campaign, it is important businesses are aware of what is available to help them through these challenging financial times. Hull Deal was launched in May, providing a comprehensive package of support for start-up businesses. The package, formed in collaboration with Business Link, brings together a range of support, designed to guide entrepreneurs through the process of setting up a business. Paul Burnley, business programmes manager for the council, said: “Hull City Council recognises the importance of providing active support for businesses both established and new, as well as those considering moving to the city. “There has been help available for local firms provided through the council and a range of partners, and there is now a package of extra initiatives to help businesses in today’s difficult trading conditions.” Another scheme is a freeze on rent for a year for small businesses occupying 200 council-run units. The move has been praised by businesses in the centres, which currently pay from £864 to £15,996 per annum in rent. First Step at the Louis Pearlman Centre in West Hull provides a children’s sports coaching service to schools and parents. It is benefiting from the scheme, which began in May. It has also taken advantage of a project offering financial help with wages, called the Local Work Guarantee Scheme. Managing Director James Moore said the support had been invaluable during difficult times.
He said: “While our business through schools hasn’t been affected by the recession, we have seen a drop in the number of parents taking up our services as people have less disposable income.
“Over the past year, sales in this area – of which represents 40 per cent of our business has decreased. So adding value to parents is really important.“We’ve been able to use the money we’ve saved from the rent freeze to spend a bit extra on marketing and now our school work is increasing. Last month, we were able to move to larger premises within the Louis Pearlman Centre, thanks to this help.” Mr. Moore, who started out in business in 2007, said the Local Work Guarantee Scheme had also helped the company with its expansion plans. The £10m project, which started in April, provides wage subsidies to employers who take job-seekers on following a work trial. First Step has taken on two job-seekers for a test period. Mr. Moore said: “The trail is at no cost to the business, which is great. If it works out well we get financial help with the wages. It’s a fantastic idea.” Bob Ferraby, investment programme manager for the scheme, said it provides enormous benefits for both job-seekers and companies. He said: “It’s a huge and project that will run for at least two and is expected to give 1,500 jobseekers the opportunity to get into work.”
